RE: lap top computers

Both my daughters have or had a mac. One is already on a PC and the other is going as soon as she gets the money. Macs overpriced and short of good software.

RE: Vista

Lwmuddy: your are repeating all the same old misstatements that have been out there for years.
6 years of xp and never once a blue screen of death. (actually once but that was a new card I installed). 6 months of vista and never once a blue screen of death.
20 of my friends that have had computers for a few years but know nothing about them haven't called me once this year with questions or problems and now it is oct. No blue screens of death, no virus's.

RE: Vista

I don't think so as most columnists are saying that the base of W7 is already in Vista. Only time will tell of course.
Also watch the alpha and beta testers. They will report on it soon.

CrossOver is free today only. (apple users)

Mac OS X and Linux only: CrossOver, a commercially-modified version of the free WINE platform that lets Linux and Mac users run Windows apps semi-natively, is giving away free licenses for all their products today. That's pretty great news for anyone who's tried to run Microsoft Office, higher-end games, or any other Windows app through WINE and found out through later Google-ing that a CrossOver product was required. The license is good for one free app, normally $40 or so, and while CrossOver products can't run every Windows product, they might help those trying to make the Linux (or Mac) switch. The deal is good for today only, and CodeWeavers' site appears slammed this morning, so keep checking back—unless you think another one of the CodeWeavers CEO's Lame Duck goals will be hit, like it did with gas prices in Minneapolis-St. Paul recently. Update: CodeWeavers has a temporary license/download page posted while their servers are down.

RE: Booting problem: why does it start in low resolution??

I hope you check back here. The dell site should have only given you drivers that fit your configuration if you put in your computer serial number etc. There would not be 7 video drivers available unless something is haywire on their site.

RE: Photo editing software for My Pictures?

In both Picasa 2 and 3, after you edit the picture, go back to the library, and at the top of the section of your file folder is an option to save the changes you have made. In 2 it will then save the original in a saved folder in the same subdir that the now updated picture is in.
In Elements it will save your picture if you have merged down you changes to one picture otherwise it saves it as a PSD extension. In either case, you have to then do a find all pictures that aren't in an album.
In each product they only have a pointer to the original picture in My Pictures, not a copy of the original. All your pictures should still be in those folders unless you point them someplace else, which is not a good idea in my opinion as more picture software looks there for the original. I have used at least 15 different photo products and they all work that way.

RE: Vista - Wait for Next Version?

How does MS test these new systems they come out with anyway?
Do they use people off the street or only tech types that download the Betas?
For a company the size of MS to release an OS that is buggy is inexcusable.
I just hope that they don't design the OS's for submarines.
How do they test? by issuing Alphas and Betas. Just as every other OS is done. Apple does it, the many versions of Linux do it, etc.
Do they use people off the street? Yes, anyone can download the betas.
Why is the software buggy? Every OS out there is buggy. Some maybe more than others but all are BUGGY. A major issue is that if you can control the environment ie the hardware you can control the bugginess. (how is that for a new word). MS as well as Linux has no control over the hardware, so therefore they are counting on the hardware vendors to write the drivers for the OS. This includes the computer, printers, cdrom etc. If you run a linux OS, and you buy a new piece of hardware (or any old one) you are stuck until you or someone else writes a driver for it. Apple has an upper hand for two reasons, the main one is they create the computer and therefore control one of the main sources for bugginess. The other is that there is a lot less hardware options available for their computers.
The last issue is the applications. Again, MS has only a few applications (maybe a few hundreds) and there are thousands more. All those applications do not test every environment they could run in. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

RE: Scanning/HP/Vista

I have the 2710 and I was able to get a complete new install from the HP Site. It was had to find. I suspect the site posted above me is where I got mine. Everything works. But I have a Toshiba and Vista.

RE: Toshiba Notebook L355D-S78 Pro's and Con's

The Toshiba should have a power setting to use less battery when not plugged in. Just click on the Battery Icon on the task bar or go to Control Panel etc. Mine has a setting that takes about half the power of balanced. It just makes the screen less bright.

RE: A minor inconvenience

That's is kind of true. But Windows explorer has(had?) a setting that would just get the page from cache. At one time years ago, sites would show a statement telling you to do a reload of their page when you revisited. If it is still there, it would be under tools internet advanced.
At one time browsers did this to save download time of every page.
I don't have any problem like that with firefox.

RE: Vista - Wait for Next Version?

I believe you will have a hard time finding a computer from a chain store company that doesn't already have SP1 on it. If you do, if they want the sale, they will load SP1 for you if you so desire. While the download could be lengthy, they will have a CD with SP1 on it.
But again, you have no need to worry.

RE: Why don't people switch from Windows?

"Market share analysis can't lie and clearly disputes your claim"
I am confused. What does market share have to do with 10 people starting out on Macs? OR what does market share have to do with what is more expensive? Confusing response. And I repeat, different is not better.
Actually I can name thousands of people who started out on Apple and then went to PC's. Apple tried to gain market share by just about giving away computers to schools even to the lower grades. They never did gain market share and those many many thousands of kids switched to PC's and never looked back.

RE: Why don't people switch from Windows?

"A Mac user is a choice after seeing something better.
Finding a user who has never used anything but a windows machine is very easy. They often will tell you they won't change because of fear of change, we've seen posts here supporting that."
I can name you at least 10 people I have known that have started on a Mac and have switched to PC's. Why, way too expensive and it isn't better, maybe different but not better.

RE: Why don't people switch from Windows?

Why not switch?
Because there isn't anything better out there.
Because the cost of the alternatives are to much in either/both time and money.
Because it works.
Because it's simple.
Because fear will not cause me to switch.
Because misstatements will not cause me to switch.

RE: Win Vista users

One more thing to try with old printers/scaners etc. Get on an European site and look around there. I have found drivers that way that word. Why don't you post what printer you have. My 2610 Photosmart didn't have drivers for Vista, but I found them by doing a little research.

RE: Need a cleaner program for my computer

I can state that I probably know more about computers than you do. (but not everything). If you use a registry cleaner regularly, 3 things will take place.
1. The program will show many things that it will want to delete and you will do that.
2. Your registry will be a teeny weeny bit smaller but your computer will not be noticeably faster unless you have a nano second timer to check it out.
3. At some point in time some program you haven't used for 2 or 3 months (many registry backups ago) will stop working correctly. You might not get it working properly even if you reinstall it.
Can someone explain to me what deleting a few hundred entries where there are many thousands of entries will do to speed up a machine?

RE: Finally fixed my Firefox memory issues

I posted this before but I will again. I went to Avast just before going to FF3. I had many memory problems with FF that I posted on their site but never received a solution etc. Many others posted the same problem. In the trouble shooting process, I decided also to go back to AVG. Guess what. My memory problems went away also.

RE: media center laptop

1. Never turn automatic updates on.
2. Automatic updates does not update every module or program. Usually you have to get Office updates and Net updates yourself.

RE: a beeping we can't figure out where it's coming from

I had an old digital watch with an alarm or 2. Put it away and forgot about it. The alarm would go off but not long enough to find it. Finally when I did hear it, I checked the time it went off. By standing in a different spot (when I could remember) I finally isolated where it was coming from.
